The LG 34GL750-B is a gaming monitor that hits a lot of the right notes and looks great while doing it. Its 34-inch diagonal is huge, and it tops its gaming credentials with a gentle curve. And, that’s not the only attractive attribute that makes it a great buy. It supports AMD FreeSync and it runs on an IPS panel. You’ll also love the 1 millisecond response time and 144GHz, all of which make for a great gaming monitor.
The 34GL750-B even looks great from behind, thanks to the beautiful ergonomic stand. For the price, this is a serious investment, one that would benefit greatly from built-in speakers and a USB-C port.
Design
Expansive screens like this always look disarming at first. Our review unit, the LG 34GL750-B has a vast 34-inch diagonal that stretches across the desk, and the curve easily draws the eye. However, once you sit closer, wide and curved screens become very practical. Its 3800mm radius spreads into a gentle arc, meaning you don’t suffer from image distortion, instead, the sides tilt the screen towards the user, the same experience you get with the LG 34UC80-B. It’s splendid, not distracting.
The 21:9 aspect ratio is more useful than what you’d get on taller 4K screens; the additional width is ideal for films, and it provides extra screen real estate for working. As described, it’s great for gaming: racing titles tend to have more immersion as scenery flashes past, and there’s more room to manoeuvre in FPS titles, and RTS and MOBA games really get a boost.
The panel is secured inside a good-looking plastic enclosure, that’s accented with red along the back of the screen and part of the stand. Build quality is also fine, and the screen feels sturdy on a desk despite its width. You don’t encounter many downsides on the LG’s design, though. The bezels around the panel are quite thick, and that’s a tiny aesthetic quibble.
Features
Going by LG’s price, it certainly means this 21:9 panel has a 2,560 x 1,080 resolution. That’s fairly lower than rival screens – both AOC CU34G2X and BenQ PD3220U use 3,440 x 1,440 – but they cost hundreds more than the LG 34GL750-B.
Having a lower resolution has its cons and pros. For instance, the LG’s pixel density of 82ppi (pixels per inch) isn’t very particularly high – it’s possible to see pixels when you’re up-close, and 3,440 x 1,440 screens tend to have a sharper density measurement of 110ppi. Most games on those screens will look smoother than on the LG 34GL750-B.
The upside, however, is that it’s easier to play most games on this screen – the lesser pixel count means that you don’t need a blazing GPU to get games running smoothly, and it also gives you enough headroom to take advantage of the LG’s 144Hz refresh rate.
By including AMD’s FreeSync technology this monitor easily runs a low figure of 50hz and a high of 144Hz. This means you’ll benefit when games run between 50fps and 144fps. It’s better than its high-end rivals: the AOC CU34G2X has FreeSync that also peaks at 144Hz.
You can connect your PC to the monitor via and upstream DisplayPort or either of the two HDMI ports, and audio comes via a headphone jack but doesn’t include built-in speakers.
Performance
The LG 34GL750-B is a strong performer on both gaming and productivity tasks. Its brightness level of 256cd/m2 is within lg’s quoted figure, and it’s bolstered by a 0.19cd/m2 – which means the LG delivers a 1,363:1 contrast ratio. The higher the contrast ratio, the better. It means your colors will be vibrant, and it helps this monitor deliver a wide range of different shades – even closely-matched tones will be easier to tell apart. And that remarkable black level easily makes dark shades really stand out – most gaming monitors aren’t this good when it come to handling those inkier tones.
Those credentials are necessary in gaming and for movies – so they’re very important on a panel like this. Response time is another vital consideration for gaming screens, and the LG performs. Its average response time of 10.2ms is excellent, anything under 20ms is fine for gaming.
Were it not for the 21:9 aspect ratio, which stretches content across a wide but narrow canvas, you’d otherwise mistaken the monitor for a TV. Games like Hitman 2 look gorgeous on this display. Details are shar that you can easily see the thin lines of code stamped on the back of Agent 47’s head2. Shadows also look great, although some objects get obscured in darker corners because of the monitor’s impressive black levels.
What makes the LG 34GL750-B a gaming display is its 1-millisecond response time and 144Hz. It also features AMD’s FreeSync technology which protects the screen from tearing.
For the most part, though, this monitor is excellent – with a sensible resolution and screen size paired with solid build quality and robust features.
Our Take
The LG 34GL750-B is a splendid gaming monitor with a gorgeous 34-inch display that boasts a 1 millisecond response time, 144Hz refresh rate and AMD’s FreeSync support. And unlike the LG 34UC89G-B, this 34-inch monitor has a pixel-packed resolution (2560 x 1080) that’s matched for its size. Combine that comprehensive feature set with excellent performance and a beautiful aesthetic – complete with red accents – and it’s hard not to love the LG 34GL750-B.
But when you spend around $400 on a monitor, you should expect perfection, which the LG 34GL750-B falls short of. Not only does the monitor lack built-in speakers but LG omitted a USB-C for future-proofing this investment.
Nonetheless, if you’re shopping on a tight budget, then the 34GL750-B should be near the top of your list. However, I you are looking at a future-proof option with a higher resolution for around the same price, the LG 34WN80C-B offers a better (3440 x 1440) resolution, USB-C port and its refresh rate maxes out at 144Hz. It remains our Editors’ Choice for midrange gaming monitors.
