CyberpowerPC GXiVR8080A28 Review: Design

The CyberpowerPC GXiVR8080A28 features the classic gaming black-and-RGB design within the confines of a compact ATX chassis. This is the same design in the CyberPowerPC SLC8260A6 that we reviewed a few months ago.

At the front of the case, you’ll find two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports (supporting 5Gbps transfers) and an audio combo jack (headphone and microphone in one). Around the back, you have four USB-A ports, two retro USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, and an audio/microphone combo. A media card reader would have been better, but it’s missing here – even major brands like HP and Acer are phasing out card readers on their desktops.

In terms of hardware and affordability, the CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme’s closest competitor would likely be the iBuypower Pro SlateMono product range, which typically is found on offer for a similar or lower price. However, it should be noted that in terms of performance, the GXiVR8080A28 is the likely winner in the match-up.

The CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme comes equipped with a full ATX case, which -despite its fairly good upgradability advantage – will end up taking some more desk space. Another key aspect within the match-up is that CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme series often receives for its too familiar – something the GXiVR8080A28 does very little to change.

Gaming Performance

As far as performance goes, that depends on the configuration you go with. Considering that you can get anything from the RTX 3050 to the RTX 3090 and everything in between, it makes sense to mention that we’ve reviewed lots of CyberpowerPC over the years, and almost none has disappointed. We can tell you that everything works as it should, and you get to spend a little less on pre-built PCs, but that doesn’t mean you’re compromising on performance.

For this review, we have the CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme GXiVR8080A28, which packs a 12^th generation Intel Core i9-12900KF processor, Nvidia RTX 3070 (8GB), 16GB DDR4 RAM, and 1TB SSD storage. Thanks to the inclusion of an Nvidia 30-series graphics card, the GXiVR8080A28 is capable of running graphically intensive games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Total War: Warhammer III, consistently hitting over 75 fps on both titles on Ultra settings.

On the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark (1440p, highest settings), the high-end CPU and cutting-edge graphics card deliver good performance, averaging 114 fps which is enough pixel-pushing ability to keep it ahead of the similarly configured iBuypower system (107 fps.) However, the Corsair ONE i300 (156 fps) and Alienware Aurora R13 (168 fps) machines with higher-end RTX 3090s perform markedly better.

Stacked up against the slightly more powerful RTX 3080 in the HP Omen 30L, the CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme holds its own. It is fairly faster in Fire Strike and within a few points in Time Spy, and it shines in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This is the newer Core i7-12700KF at work, which can boost your frame rate in open-world games like Valhalla.

At 1440p, the Nvidia RTX 3070 is an absolute powerhouse, blowing through most AAA titles with at least 60, but mostly around 100+ fps. Even in Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition without DLSS, the RTX 3070 Ti sits pretty at 65 fps at 1440p – and that’s with all the shiny ray-traced effects enabled.

Even at 4K, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti in the GXiVR8080A28 remains unshaken. In games like Dirt 5, Final Fantasy XIV, and Horizon Zero Dawn, the RTX 3070 has no problem at all staying well above 60 fps at max settings, making it an easy choice if you play a lot of MMOs and want to play at 4K.

But the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 doesn’t exist in a vacuum. At 1440p, the RTX 3070’s performance is fairly below the RTX 3070 Ti, but not so much that it’ll make a huge difference. And while the RTX 3070 can do 4K gaming, and can do it quite well, it doesn’t come close to the RTX 3080 in the Alienware Aurora R14. For instance, in Metro Exodus, Aurora R14 is a whopping 27% faster, and just a few hundred more expensive. That means that the RTX 3080 is a little expensive and is simply a better value.

Productivity Performance

Our CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme review unit is the GXiVR8080A28, which comes with a Core i7-12700KF processor, similar specs as those found inside the MSI Aegis RS. The Intel Core i7-12700KF is just a step below Intel’s Core i9-12900K. Well, this isn’t a flagship processor but it delivers flagship performance. It punches above the Core i9-10900K in the Gamer Xtreme and goes toe-to-toe with the Ryzen 9 5900X inside the Asus ROG GA35DX.

The Core i7-12700KF’s single-core strength emphasizes the benefits of Intel’s 12th-gen chips, beating out most competitors, including the Core i9-10900K and Ryzen 9 5900X. What’s surprising is how much the Core i7-12700KF can do against the Ryzen 9 5900X.

Both of these chips come with 12 cores, but only eight of those cores are performance-focused on the Core i7-12700KF. Still, it outperforms the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X in Geekbench and gets within striking distance in Cinebench. Elsewhere, the flagship Core i9-12900K in Corsair ONE i300 is about 15% faster, but the Core i7-12700KF remains excellent for productivity and content creation.

A higher-end configuration is better if you’re a professional creative or artist. However, for the hobbyist who wants to game and stream, edit a few YouTube videos, or dive into 3D modeling, this midrange CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme VR configuration is a perfect choice.

If you primarily care about gaming and need a system that will run fine now and can be upgraded in the future, the CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme GXiVR8080A28 is a powerful, future-proof, and attractive rig that should keep most gamers happily fragging and streaming for years to come.
