HP 24-cb1142 Review

The HP 24-cb1142 All-in-One is perfect for anyone looking for a capable all-in-one PC that’s easy to set up and starts using. Its 23.8-inch 1080p screen, decent Ryzen 5 CPU, and AMD Radeon graphics make it for work and entertainment pursuits. Though a bit lacking in creative power, this AIO offers all the functionality you could want in an affordable machine.

In this HP 24-cb1142 review, I’ll go over the features and what it’s like to use this all-in-one for daily computing tasks, and how it stacks as a business PC. As things stand, this is an AIO I’d recommend to most folks, even those wishing for iMacs but held back by the price. I dare say this is a better version of the HP 24-dd0210, and this year’s model is more powerful with a Ryzen 5 chip over the Athlon Silver 3050U in last year’s model. Read on to find out why.

About the HP 24-cb1142

The HP 24-cb1142 sports a fairly basic design. Though the cloud-white color and widescreen display standout, the AIO doesn’t draw much attention to itself and easily blends into your work environment. Its simple, wire-frame stand touches down in four corners, covering a rectangle of just 14.2 inches by 8 inches deep.

The display on the HP AIO is a 23-inch Full HD (1920 by 1080) resolution panel. It isn’t the brightest around – rated at only 250nits brightness and it has narrow viewing angles. Still, it’s a good match for productivity, watching movies, and Netflix bingeing, thanks to fairly accurate colors and decent contrast.

All ports are located at the rear of the screen, where you have two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, one HDMI, a microphone/headphone combo, and an Ethernet port. HP didn’t include even a single USB-C port, a painful omission, meaning you’ll need an adapter to connect any of your Type-C-compliant gadgets.

On the top bezel, there’s a pop-up webcam, that you can use for zoom meetings, but it won’t be the best for capturing videos as it comes with a low-quality resolution.

Performance

Performance is the one area where the HP 24-cb1142 isn’t right at the top of its game. Don’t get me wrong, with an AMD Ryzen 5 chip and 12GB of RAM, you’re not going to find it slow. However, pitted against recent desktops or laptops with 12th-generation Intel Core i7s and Core i9s, not to mention AMD’s Ryzen 6000-series processors, this Ryzen 5 AIO can’t compete at the top level.

Also, with a full HD (1920 x 1080-pixel) resolution, the display is a bit dull (rated only 250 nits at max brightness), and its off-axis viewing angles are mediocre. Such a display suffices for watching Netflix, YouTube, or streaming content, when you’re seated right in Infront of the system. HD content looks crisp and depicts accurate colors, with good contrast.

However, when you move closer, you being to see the individual pixels on the display. Luckily, this screen-door effect isn’t as evident on those displays as it would be stretched across a 27- or 32-inch 1080p panel. If I was going for a 27-inch or bigger display, I’d certainly go for something with a 2K or 4K resolution, but 1080p is sufficient here, especially since the HP 24-cb1142 isn’t powerful enough to run any creative work.

Surprisingly, the HP 24-cb1142 arrives with stereo speakers that are sweet to use. They produce powerful sound that’s bigger than a laptop’s audio output. The speakers are loud enough to fill a small room, and you’ll need to keep the sound at the 50 percent level or lower when seated in front of the system. For Netflix binge and YouTube streams, the built-in speakers are more than enough.

Bottom Line

Some people tend to dismiss AIO computers because they aren’t as powerful as traditional desktops. While that’s true since most AIOs run on mobile hardware, machines like the HP 24-cb1142 have benefits that make them great choices over traditional laptops and desktops. The main advantage the HP 24-cb1142 has over an entry-level laptop at or near its price is a roomier display and decent audio.

In short, what you sacrifice in portability you gain in screen real estate and better sound for your movies and videos – and you can even run productivity apps side-by-side with ease. As long as you keep your expectations in check, the HP 24-cb1142 (2022) will make a great addition to your desktop with its stylish, nice-looking, and rock-bottom price.
