Dell Inspiron i5459-7020SLV Review

OUR VERDICT

EDITORS' RATING

GOOD

The Dell Inspiron i5459-7020SLV is attractively designed and it performs well. It also comes with something that has become more-and-more of a must have: a touch screen. The hardware is sturdy, and the components are decent enough for daily productivity in the office and at home. PROS: Speedy day to day performance. HDMI in and out. 12GB of memory. CONS: Screen bounce in some positions. Slow hard drive.

The Dell Inspiron i5459-7020SLV brings high-end features like a powerful Intel Core i7 processor, dual-hinge height and tilt mechanism down from the premium Dell XPS line down to the more affordable model lines. It strikes a good blend of design and performance, giving power users a lot of desktop for far much less.

It has more useful features, and even comes with something that has become more and more of a much have: a touch screen. If you’re in the market for an entry-level All-in-One (AIO) desktop, then here is a system worth a long look, at a price that’s hard to ignore.

Design and Features

The Inspiron i5459 leverages some of the features first seen in the Dell XPS One 27 Touch. The whistles and bells here include the dual hinge that functions to both tilt and adjust the screen height.

The main advantage of using the dual hinge is that it gives you an assurance of finding an optimal screen position irrespective of your sitting position: vertical, reclined, or even when standing. If anything, the dual hinge gives the system some versatility, but it doesn’t have connector on its base, like most dual-hinge systems; rather, they’re built into the screen.

The 23-inch display boasts a full HD 1,920-by-1,080 resolution with a 10-point touch capability. We found it to be responsive, though it is still recommendable to use the included wireless keyboard and mouse during extended typing sessions. Just like any typical touch-enabled AIO, there is some screen bounce during touch operations. Not a deal -breaker as such, but something to be aware of.

Performance

The Inspiron i5459 comes with a 2.8GHz Intel; Quad Core i7-6700T processor (turbo up to 3.60GHz), Intel HD Graphics 530, 12GB DDR3L memory and 1TB 5400rpm storage. This combo gives the system class-leading performance for day-to-day productivity tasks. It suffices as a desktop of choice for offices, students or even for use at home, as it comes with fast booting, opening apps, copying files among other tasks.

Sadly, for gamers it’s not one of those AIOs you can consider, and the lack of a discrete graphics card doesn’t help either. For daily productivity, entertainment and office tasks it is a competent desktop just like other systems like the Vizio CA27T-B1.

Port selection is robust, which allows Dell put in a thin screen. If you’ve used the Apple iMac, you’ll realize that the Dell has a similar thin side profile, with both having their electronics into the screen. The Inspiron i5459 has two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, a SD card reader, and HDMI-in and -out ports, an audio out and headphone jack as well as an Ethernet port built into its screen.

On the other hand, the HDMI-in and -out ports are a great addition, since they let you either utilize multi-monitor capabilities or use the Inspiron’s built in monitor with future PCs or even set top boxes and console games. Also bundled into the package is a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Conclusion

The Dell Inspiron i5459-7020SLV has very good performance, decent styling, and brings the XPS line’s dual hinge screen down to a more affordable all-in-one desktop. It comes with a decent set of components and features like HDMI-out, more system memory, and enough storage, albeit slow.

The midrange all-in-one desktop arena is more of a game of leapfrog than a homerun derby. In this case, the Dell Inspiron i5459 leaps past most AIOs in the market worth a long look as you shop around, and so is the Dell Inspiron 24 3000 Series Desktop.
